Species: Otodus sokolovi (syn. Carcharocles sokolovi) Age: Upper Eocene (Priabonian) Formation: Samlat Formation Provenance: Dakhla, Sahara Desert, Morocco Size: ±61.3mm (2.41") slant height Condition: Likely repaired, but no compositing |
This is a fossilized shark tooth from an Otodus sokolovi from the Dakhla region of Morocco. The tooth likely has repair or some filling in the root, but the tooth is not composited as seen in many O. sokovovi specimens. Unfortunately, one of the cusps is missing.
Otodus sokolovi is an interesting transitional species that fits in between O. auriculatus and O. angustidens. This lineage of Otodus is currently believed to have eventually evolved into the famous Otodus megalodon.
