Species: cf. Afrovenator abakensis Age: Middle Jurassic (Bathonian-Oxfordian) Formation: Irhazer Group Provenance: Effonfone, Agadez, Niger Size: ±40mm (1.5") Condition: No repair or restorations; stabilized with Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in acetone |
This is a listing for 1 partial theropod tooth of a cf. Afrovenator. Despite the fractured appearance, this fossil is very stabilize due to the very tough matrix that holds the tooth together. Unfortunately, I don't quite understand the locale, "Effonfone" making it difficult to ascertain which formation the specimen comes from. It is possible the name was long-lost in translation.
The heavily fractured look of teeth from the deserts of Niger appear to come out of the ground in this state with very strong matrix holding the tooth together tightly. This is likely why they get their more common white and fragmented-looking condition after being worn by the harsh desert condition.
